The first initiative in support of the local population was the <strong>design and construction of a bridge of about 100 metres over the Payee river<\/strong>, along the road connecting Rumbek to Yirol, in partnership with the Italian Department of Civil Protection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This first direct experience in the country, along with meeting an Italian Comboni missionary who had been living in those lands for over 30 years, triggered the idea of creating a <strong>non-profit organisation<\/strong> to manage, plan, finance, build and <strong>support a vocational primary school<\/strong> in that area &#8211; the Ireneo Dud Vocational Training Centre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>In 2006 I.CO.P.\u2019s<\/strong> owners, together with some managers and employees, <strong>founded the Sudin Onlus Association<\/strong>, involving many other companies and workers from the construction sector. The commitment undertaken by I.CO.P. was not limited to this: the company put its technical staff, without which the development of the project would have been impossible, at the disposal of the initiatives undertaken locally.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><br \/>\n<div  class='avia-image-container  av-styling-    avia-builder-el-4  el_after_av_textblock  el_before_av_textblock  avia-align-center '  itemprop=\"image\" itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"  ><div class='avia-image-container-inner'><div class='avia-image-overlay-wrap'><img class='avia_image' src='https:\/\/www.icop.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/8_Indipendenza-economica-ed-energetica-4.jpg' alt='' title='' height=\"396\" width=\"1473\"  itemprop=\"thumbnailUrl\"  \/><\/div><\/div><\/div><br \/>\n<section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The activities in this country have continued and continue on <strong>four main fronts<\/strong>:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">the \u201cIreneo Dud Vocational Training Centre\u201d <strong>school of arts and crafts<\/strong>;<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">a sustainable <strong>farming business<\/strong>;<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">the I.CO.P. South Sudan branch as a <strong>business incubator<\/strong> for local youth;<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">a <strong>vegetable garden and other projects<\/strong> for women.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/section><br \/>\n<div  class='av-horizontal-gallery av-horizontal-gallery-large-gap av-horizontal-gallery-enlarge-effect av-horizontal-gallery-1 itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Ireneo Dud Vocational Training Centre<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">The Ireneo Dud Vocational Training Centre is located in Bahrgel (Cuiebet County, Lake state, South Sudan), a <strong>rural village of about 1000 inhabitants<\/strong>. This is a school directly managed by <strong>Sudin Onlus<\/strong>, in cooperation with the Diocese of Rumbek, through the Ireneo Dud Foundation, a local body fully ruled and controlled by Sudin. The entire centre <strong>stands on a plot of about 500 hectares<\/strong>, donated by the local government in 2006.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Sudin worked with the newly-established Ministry of local education to structure the <strong>study plan for vocational schools<\/strong>, that did not exist previously. In this context, the contribution of the company\u2019s professionals and technicians involved in the projects was fundamental.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><br \/>\n<div  class='avia-image-container  av-styling-    avia-builder-el-9  el_after_av_textblock  avia-builder-el-last  avia-align-center '  itemprop=\"image\" itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"  ><div class='avia-image-container-inner'><div class='avia-image-overlay-wrap'><img class='avia_image' src='https:\/\/www.icop.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/4_Ireneo-Dud-Vocational-Training-Center-1-scaled.jpg' alt='' title='4_Ireneo Dud Vocational Training Center (1)' height=\"1707\" width=\"2560\"  itemprop=\"thumbnailUrl\"  \/><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  avia-builder-el-10  el_after_av_one_full  el_before_av_one_half  column-top-margin\" style='border-radius:0px; '><section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In the Centre, in addition to <strong>classic subjects<\/strong> (English, mathematics, science, social studies, geography, history and religion), <strong>technical subjects<\/strong> are also taught: building (theoretical and practical course), agriculture (practical course), weaving (practical course for girls).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The centre also organised other training courses. The civil wars that devastated these lands left them without anything. There is no <strong>literacy<\/strong> and basic knowledge about hygienic-health measures is totally absent. To address essential needs, several <strong>courses were organised for the local population<\/strong> inside the centre:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">an <strong>English<\/strong> course;<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">a <strong>basic hygiene<\/strong> course;<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>parenting support<\/strong> courses.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/section><br \/>\n<div  class='avia-image-container  av-styling-    avia-builder-el-12  el_after_av_textblock  el_before_av_textblock  avia-align-center '  itemprop=\"image\" itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"  ><div class='avia-image-container-inner'><div class='avia-image-overlay-wrap'><img class='avia_image' src='https:\/\/www.icop.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/5_Attivit\u00e0-del-centro-5.jpg' alt='' title='' height=\"536\" width=\"1471\"  itemprop=\"thumbnailUrl\"  \/><\/div><\/div><\/div><br \/>\n<section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The vocational training centre is currently attended by <strong>about 100 students<\/strong> of which at least thirty are girls (a noteworthy amount, given the context).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Since the beginning of the project, <strong>over 500 students<\/strong> have attended the school and over 250 of them have already graduated. Over 300 women have attended basic and agricultural courses. <strong>Over 600 families<\/strong> have had the opportunity to take part in horticulture, basic hygiene, nutrition training and parenting support course.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Currently, <strong>9 temporary workers<\/strong> (local people, <strong>three of which are women<\/strong>) and <strong>18 permanent workers<\/strong> are employed at the centre. The employees mainly perform tasks of maintenance and enlargement of the centre and the school and are responsible for the kitchen.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><br \/>\n<section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It is important to underline that the centre, in addition to its training function, has become a <strong>landmark in a vast territory<\/strong>. The Centre has a small dispensary (supervised by an Italian volunteer) where <strong>first aid<\/strong> is provided and it has become a place of refuge for the locals, especially when violence breaks out and the safety of people is in great danger. One of these was the agricultural project.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><br \/>\n<div  class='avia-image-container  av-styling-    avia-builder-el-23  el_after_av_textblock  el_before_av_textblock  avia-align-center '  itemprop=\"image\" itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"  ><div class='avia-image-container-inner'><div class='avia-image-overlay-wrap'><img class='avia_image' src='https:\/\/www.icop.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/7_Contributo-della-scuola-al-territorio-3.jpg' alt='' title='' height=\"469\" width=\"1264\"  itemprop=\"thumbnailUrl\"  \/><\/div><\/div><\/div><br \/>\n<section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">In Cueibet county, the agricultural activity of the population is performed with poor production techniques. The food coming from Kenya and Uganda, which accounts for much of the diet, becomes more and more difficult to import due to road conditions and ethnic conflict which considerably increase the price already inaccessible for most Sudanese families. The <strong>sustainable agricultural project<\/strong> aims to improve the food self-sufficiency of the community in Barghel.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/p><\/div>\n<div  style='height:1px; margin-top:-10px'  class='hr hr-invisible   avia-builder-el-25  el_after_av_one_full  el_before_av_one_half '><span class='hr-inner ' ><span class='hr-inner-style'><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"flex_column av_one_half  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  avia-builder-el-26  el_after_av_hr  el_before_av_one_half  \" style='border-radius:0px; '><section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p><span class=\"s2\">The activities carried out to achieve this goal include:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\"><strong>&#8211; activation and continuity of partnerships with FAO<\/strong> (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) e WFP (World Food Program) for the distribution of seeds and agricultural input;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\"><strong>&#8211; training<\/strong> for the improvement of agricultural techniques;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\"><strong>&#8211; preparation<\/strong> of land for cultivation;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\"><strong>&#8211; distribution<\/strong> of seeds and agricultural equipment;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\"><strong>&#8211; construction<\/strong> of wells for the improvement of agricultural land irrigation.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>\n<div class=\"flex_column av_one_half  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding   avia-builder-el-28  el_after_av_one_half  el_before_av_hr  \" style='border-radius:0px; '><div  class='avia-image-container  av-styling-    avia-builder-el-29  avia-builder-el-no-sibling  avia-align-center '  itemprop=\"image\" itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"  ><div class='avia-image-container-inner'><div class='avia-image-overlay-wrap'><img class='avia_image' src='https:\/\/www.icop.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/5_Attivit\u00e0-del-centro-3.jpg' alt='' title='' height=\"866\" width=\"1299\"  itemprop=\"thumbnailUrl\"  \/><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<div  style='height:1px; margin-top:-10px'  class='hr hr-invisible   avia-builder-el-30  el_after_av_one_half  el_before_av_one_full '><span class='hr-inner ' ><span class='hr-inner-style'><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  avia-builder-el-31  el_after_av_hr  el_before_av_hr  \" style='border-radius:0px; '><section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">An <strong>annual course in agricultural<\/strong> practice has been permanently included in the study plan of the school. The practical exercises are held in the demonstration garden in the centre. In this garden, <strong>fruit and vegetables are grown<\/strong> both for volunteers and students, teachers, and workers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The centre also provides a paid service for <strong>grinding cereals<\/strong> (sorghum and corn), with the aim of raising revenues for the school and helping the local community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">To provide the centre with its own source of energy, <strong>solar panels<\/strong> and a <strong>40-kWh photovoltaic system<\/strong> have been installed; the photovoltaic system <strong>gives the school building total energy autonomy<\/strong> as well as powering a new irrigation system for the vegetable garden and the arable land prepared by I.CO.P.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>\n<div  style='height:50px' class='hr hr-invisible   avia-builder-el-33  el_after_av_one_full  el_before_av_one_full '><span class='hr-inner ' ><span class='hr-inner-style'><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  avia-builder-el-34  el_after_av_hr  el_before_av_one_half  \" style='border-radius:0px; '><section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I.CO.P. The profits derived from the works are devolved to the IDF, which remains <strong>I.CO.P.\u2019s main partner in South Sudan<\/strong>, especially in terms of staff training.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">To guarantee the continuation of the project, <strong>I.CO.P. ensures the availability of personnel<\/strong>, in addition to resources, equipment, and raw materials. At least once a year, the company ships materials from Italy: food, spare parts, and materials for the construction of wells.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The branch participates in competitive tendering and prepares bids in order to <strong>perform onsite works, which can be completed through the cooperation between its staff and the young workers trained in the vocational training centre<\/strong>. For a total value of more than one million euro, these works have raised more than 150.000,00 euro for the school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">In 2018, I.CO.P. tendered the first call for proposals for profit enterprises aimed at selecting &#8220;innovative business initiatives&#8221; for the financing of its &#8220;Social Business for South Sudan: <strong>support for entrepreneurship in South Sudan<\/strong>, from the humanitarian emergency to human and social development&#8221; (section &#8220;mature ideas&#8221;) project. Men have more than one wife and a large number of children that are not always taken care of. The head of the family lets the mother take care of raising the children, of their support, and of leading animals to pasture. Women live most of their lives without the presence of their husbands, without economic support. As a consequence, they are exposed to an increased lack of food security that has direct consequences on their and their children\u2019s health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">I.CO.P. aims to <strong>open up new training and working opportunities for women<\/strong>.
